2023 Bobar Chardonnay, Yarra Valley, VIC. 750ml.
Words from Mike Bennie, WineFront.
I’ve just run through what I reckon is the best releases yet from Bobar. I remember being warmly welcomed into the Belford family home many, many moons ago to taste what must have been close to if not the first releases and have tried the wines year-on-year since. I like the wines a lot, but something has shifted gear in this suite of wines. Tom and Sally are lovely humans to boot. Been a while since a good hello, but hey, you get the gist in the wines.
This is bell ring clear. It’s kind of gentle but vividly fresh. Green apple crunch, tart lime juice zestiness, an undertow of almond and hazelnut but gently there with cooling, briny minerality on show. It does savouriness well, it does refreshment well. It has this distinct sense of complexity and detail in the fruit profile, light seasoning of spice, that mineral vein that lands at the lip-smacking end of the spectrum. It’s a ripper.
