2016 Muller-Catoir 'Burgergarten Im Breumel' Riesling. Grosses Gewaechs Haardt/Pfalz-GERMANY. 750ml
This terrific Riesling comes from the renowned Bürgergarten vineyard on the lower slopes of the Haardt mountains. It's a site that is rated as Grosses Gewächs or Grand Cru and was first planted over 700 years ago, making it one of the oldest vineyards in the Pfalz. When a vineyard survives this long, it normally tells you something. The top-soils of the Bürgergarten are sandy and deep with yellow sandstone bedrock below. It's a soil that brings power, perfume and an intense mineral freshness. In 2016 the vines were cropped at 40 hl/ha, resulting in a ripe, pulpy yet mouth-watering wine with invigorating, mixed citrus peel fruit shot through with crystalline freshness and a smoky, salty complexity. Texture, energy, character and drive, this is dry Pfalz Riesling at its most distinguished.
